The Picture That Launched a First Floor Makeover

My friend Char asked me to help her with her dining room curtains, then next thing ya know we are redoing her entire first floor. She showed me a picture that she loved, she loved the things in it and the relaxed look of it. She told me that she hated her dining room because they never use it, it's too formal. She wanted to make the space more inviting and a place that people wanted to be in. The picture that she showed me is used in the design of her home, and it is below in the picture. It's the picture that launched a first floor makeover.

It really helped give me insight to what she liked and I started a story board for her. My focus was the dining room because it really bugged her, The entrance to their home was also right next to the dining room so I needed the room to feel welcoming and warm and we started looking for paint colors and a new dining room table set. Below is her old dining room.

You can see what she means by formal, although it's a beautiful room it had become outdated and she had lost her love for it. The walls were quite dark and needed some freshening up. You an also see the entrance, the brown wall is the first thing that guests saw when they walked into the home. You can also see where we are building a wall in the bottom picture, that is where we decided to change the formal living room (that no one used) into an office and turn the office into her daughters room.

The finished product is below. The table, settee, bench and two chairs are all from different places, except the bench and table - those were purchased together. The reclaimed wood wall is made from old barns in Colorado and came from McPhee and McGinity.

So here it it, the before and after. Do you feel the change? Doesn't it feel lighter, don't you want to sit down and have a glass of wine and look at Pinterest?

My new favorite dining room! I love the relaxed yet formal look of it and I love that it feels lighter. Let me know if you are ready for a make-under in your formal dining room.
